Nine matches without Mauro Icardi. Nine matches, from February 14th to March 17th, that is from the 1-0 victory over Rapid Vienna to the 3-2 against Milan this past Sunday. Inter have learned to be without its former captain, thanks to a very convincing Lautaro Martinez and many other factors. It has been over one month out for Mauro who for many was essential given statistics and numbers. But looking at past matches, we see a different reality one that is worth investigating.

Let’s start with numbers: in these nine matches, between Serie A and Europa League, Inter have five wins, two draws and two defeats. It is impossible to forget the dynamics that lead to the draw in Florence and the defeat against Cagliari: referee decisions weighed heavily on both matches.

At the Franchi, Abisso’s decision to give Fiorentina the last-minute and non-existent penalty cost Inter two points and versus Cagliari, Banti failed to send off Cigarini (should have received at least 3 yellow cards in the first 20 minutes of the match).
