Jermaine Defoe has pleaded for Rangers fans to remain patient and stick with Steven Gerrard, insisting he can deliver success at Ibrox.

The blue half of Glasgow are facing an eighth-straight season without major silverware after they were knocked out of the Scottish Cup against Aberdeen on Tuesday, having already crashed out of the League Cup and Europa League.

Is Gerrard’s Rangers job at risk? Five key things to know…

  1. Steven Gerrard took up his first management role with Rangers at the start of the season.
  2. After a promising start, the Gers are now out of all cup competitions.
  3. They also lie eight points behind fierce rivals, Celtic, in the Scottish Premiership table.
  4. #GerrardOut has begun trending on Twitter following their Scottish Cup defeat to Aberdeen.
  5. But Jermaine Defoe has insisted Gerrard can deliver success at Ibrox, calling for patience.

Rangers are also eight points behind fierce rivals, Celtic, in the Scottish Premiership title race, with #GerrardOut trending on Twitter after Tuesday’s loss.

But on-loan striker Defoe has called for patience from the Ibrox faithful, insisting the former Liverpool star can manage the club to success.

“Fans are going to be frustrated, just like the players. This is a massive football club and when you’re playing for a big football club, there’s big demands,” the 36-year-old said. “You have to play well every game. The fans expect you to win, expect you to progress in these kinds of tournaments.

“But, I think in the short space of time I’ve been here, watching other games on TV and stuff like that, I wouldn’t want to be in other dressing rooms.

“I think if you look at the quality we’ve got in the dressing room, the international players we’ve got, it’s a time for the football club to be excited. The fans should be excited.

“Yes, it’s a disappointment after the Aberdeen defeat, but I just think it can take time for things to build.

“You can get the best players in the world and put them together. But it’s not going to become an unbelievable team overnight. Sometimes it takes time. And you’ve seen that with the best teams and best players.

“But if I was a Rangers fan, watching the games on the terraces with a season ticket, I’d definitely be excited. It’s a club and a team definitely going places.”

The view among Rangers fans

Despite it being his first season in management, Gerrard’s inability to deliver a trophy for Rangers this season, as well as their recent poor form, certainly has Rangers fans divided on whether or not he should stay in the dugout.

As always, Twitter has been the platform for the heated debate…
