In an interview with Club del Deportista, Diego Godin talks about his farewell to Atletico Madrid but looks forward to that the future has in store for him.
“I just want to continue to compete, going to a new team where I can bring experience and give my best. I try to be a good leader, an example and to show respect. From a personal point of view, I always felt at home here in Spain mainly due to the friendships that I have, for the language and culture. On and off the pitch, I made friends with many people who gave me stability and serenity in my personal life which made me very happy. Football is just like life, it is a state of mind. If you are happy and you know it, it is easier for you to perform on the pitch and this happened to me here in Spain.
“Everything has an end and this is the end for me at Atletico. But my thoughts and feelings will always remain here. It is gratifying that my teammates, rivals and fans are giving me so much recognition. To me, this is a source of pride. This team deserves many things, has many merits. Simeone? No one can imagine an Atletico Madrid without him. Today, this club is in the top four or five in Europe. People see the elimination against Juventus as a disaster but we are used to winning and competing against clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich. Now everyone wants to join this Atletico team.”
