The versatility of the likes of Fabinho and James Milner is crucial to keeping Liverpool’s ambitions on track, according to Jordan Henderson.

Fabinho has switched to centre-back for each of the Reds’ past two games, while Milner filled in at right-back when defensive injuries mounted in December.

Fitness issues – and how to deal with them – remain a factor for Jürgen Klopp to consider ahead of today’s Premier League meeting with Crystal Palace at Anfield.

Henderson has faith, however, that the squad contains the players with not just the ability, but the attitude, to adjust and thrive as necessary.

“Aside from the big task of trying to get the right result in this game, we also have the challenge of a few injuries at the moment and we, as the players, know this means we all have to step up, be flexible and adapt,” writes the captain in his matchday programme notes.

“In recent games we take great inspiration from people like Fabinho. Yes, he’s an experienced international with a track record of performing well in multiple positions – but to play centre-half at Brighton and play like he did impressed everyone.

“There was no fuss or drama from Fab – he just delivered.

“James Milner, as the gaffer has joked, has played just about every position on the pitch except as ‘keeper. Already this season he’s filled in at full-back and the way he gets on with his job and puts the team first is a perfect example as well.

“At the time of this column going to print we have Gini and Trent also likely to be out but with no specific time-frame, so hopefully back soon.

“But it does mean our numbers are stretched and the importance of every member of the squad is highlighted even more.

“The manager has stressed this since day one and we’ve seen it in recent weeks.”
