Tears, emotion, gratitude of a footballer towards his supporters and a city that has adopted him as one of its own for 9 years. Diego Godin has finally said goodbye to Atletico Madrid and made his first official steps towards Inter where he will arrive on a free transfer in July with a super wage of €6.75M net per season.
“These are my final matches here and I want you all to hear it from my because Atletico Madrid to me are family and I am one of its many supporters,” said the Uruguayan defender during his goodbye press conference yesterday.
President Cerezo then took some time to thank Godin for his service: “You are a key player of the best period in this club’s history. This remains your home, no matter where you go next season.”
Nine seasons, eight trophies and 387 matches with Atletico Madrid: he will always remain an icon of this club although it was not possible for both sides to find an agreement to renew contract.
And now Inter are waiting, with the hope that his arrival is only the first of many signings that push Inter towards Juventus. Certainly, Godin is the final piece to complete the central defense of the club which will lose Miranda who is destined to return to Brazil. The Uruguayan will play an important role in the defense next season together with Milan Skriniar and Stefan De Vrij. It remains to be seen if all three are going to be starting center backs in a three-man backline (under Conte) or in a rotation in a four-man defense (Spalletti). Regardless of formation, Inter will have one of the best defenses in Europe next season.
