In an interview with Sky transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio talks about the need to sacrifice some talented young prospects such as Zaniolo for financial reasons.

“Perhaps letting some of them go would allow us to win tittles in the future. Above all, I am thinking of Bonucci who was sacrificed in a deal with Genoa in 2009 which brought us Diego Milito and Thiago Motta and we all know that Inter won because of them. I hope that we will speak of Zaniolo in the same way as Bonucci in a few years. In order to get Nainggolan and win, we had to make a sacrifice, letting go a player who certainly has great potential.

“The biggest regret? Definitely Coutinho. I’ll be honest, it was not because of economic reasons because as soon as we sold him, we signed Kovacic and Icardi. Branca, myself and the whole technical department would have kept him here for 20 years but he wasn’t playing. Every six months or so he would come and ask us to leave (rightfully so) because he wanted to play.”
