Chelsea assistant manager Gianfranco Zola has confirmed Bayern Munich’s interest in the club’s talented winger Callum Hudson-Odoi.
The arrival of Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund has led to reports of an impending departure of Hudson-Odoi.
Will Hudson-Odoi move to Germany? Here’s what you need to know…
- Callum Hudson-Odoi is well thought of as one of the most exciting young players to emerge through the Chelsea youth system.
- However, the 18-year-old has only played 42 minutes of Premier League football this season.
- Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has previously said that Hudson-Odoi needs to improve.
- Bayern Munich have reportedly bid £30 million for the winger.
Chelsea legend Zola – who played 290 times scoring 70 goals for the Blues during his playing days – has confirmed the interest from the reigning Bundesliga champions, but insisted that the club still want the young Englishman to remain at Stamford Bridge.
“We’ve proposed a contract for quite a while, so we’re waiting,” said Zola via BBC Sport.
“We certainly value him as a player. It’s about patience. I believe he has a bright future with us.”
Zola added: “I know Bayern is very interested in him, but we’re interested in him as well.”
Hudson-Odoi needs “patience”
With Bayern upping their offer, they have certainly showcased their intention of bringing Hudson-Odoi to Germany.
This effort will not have gone unnoticed by the youngster, who may have grown frustrated with the lack of first-team opportunities he has been given this season under Sarri.
However, Zola has advised the Chelsea winger that time outside the starting eleven is “not a waste of time” but “a time you can get better”.
“I know he hasn’t played probably as much as he wanted but this is down to the quality of the players in front of him,” added Zola, 52.
“It’s about patience. I believe he has a bright future with us, but he will have to learn that right now, for him, it’s important to get better and better every day.”
